Abstract (EN)

The elements of photography and graphic design play a very important role in presenting news to readers in newspapers in the Turkish press as well as the world press. News consisting of a plain written text is transformed into a form that can be read by readers more easily with the help of photos and graphics. The readers have been seeing the photograph as an important document that helps to prove the news in the newspapers since it was first discovered. An event taking place in anywhere in the world is reached to everyone via a photo. Photography is so important for the newspaper that it can show and explain all the news itself, without even a descriptive news text. However, this strong visual impact of photography is not sufficient when it comes to some news. Designers who prepare newspaper pages make use of graphics when they cannot use photography. Infographic expression, one of the most influential figures of graphic objects, is a type of news presentation with the help of which a news text without a visual on a newspaper can be colorized and can give detailed information on a narrow page. As infographic news is read with pleasure, it is becoming more and more accepted by readers. Is infographics, which offer less text and plenty of visual information to readers who get bored with the monotony of the daily news, be able to outpace news being presented by photography? Do the readers see the news presentation prepared by using infographic in the newspapers or the news presentation via photography more acceptable? This thesis explores whether the readers prefer news presented via infographics or photography.
