Abstract (EN)

This thesis, starting from before Islam, covers the historical development of the polyphonic music in Turkey including the pre-republic and post-republic periods. With the help of the speeches of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk within the Turkish Parlament about his notions regarding Modern Turkish Music, this text also emphesizes his reforms on music in Republic era. The journey of Turkish Music from the foundation till the origins of the Turkish Five along with the nationalism movement issues are studied. After studying the places of Turkish Folk Music and Traditional Turkish Music in Turkish Culture, this text also mentions about how the Turkish Five carried Western Music Standarts and combined those standarts with them. Known as Turkish Five; the lives of Ulvi Cemal ERKİN, Cemal Reşit REY, Hasan Ferit ALNAR, Adnan SAYGUN ve Necil Kazım AKSES, the conditions of the time period they had been living are mentioned. Their efforts on the synthesis of the Traditional Turkish and Folk Music with the Western Formed Music understanding are investigated.
