The concept of the family and the relationship of father-son in Turkish cinema

The rapid increase of changes and development in the world has influenced Turkey, too, but at the same time she has been in effort to keepher present values as they have been. This study has based upon searching for the changes in the family which is the basic institution of the society (especially in terms of father and son relations) and the effects of these changes on the cinema or filming.The social changes in the society such as; migration from rural areas to urban zones which started in 1950?s, industrialisation, urbanisation, population movements and influence of mass media on the family and the relations of the people within the family have also changed the family structure in ?Turkish Cinema? which is naturally fed from the society.In traditional Turkish social structure ?Father? is the dominant figure who is responsible for decision making within the family. This status is kept exactly the same way in the scenarios written for the cinema. In this traditional structure, with the clarified sexual role definitions ?man?s authority? has been approved without dispute. At the same time father and son relationship has also been clarified according to traditional values and economic structure. Father is the land-owner so, he is the sole representative of the authority. Yet, as a result of changes in both social and economic structure, father has lost his power. Son has to look for some other opportunities beyond soil. That has resulted in cracks between father and son relations. Son?s starting to earn his own living and not being economically bounded to his father or father?s land has resulted in interrogating the father?s authority.While socioeconomic structure has progressed on this path, the reflection of this process in the cinema has naturally been similar. Changes in the family especially in father and son relationship is the fundamental point of this study.
