The review of the transformation of the narrative codes in the road and journey themed movies in Turkish cinema

The concept of odyssey enables individuals to undergo profound changes in their emotions and thoughts due to encountering unforeseen events. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to address social and political aspects during the journey. Consequently, as the production of road films in Turkish cinema increases, the narrative codes of these films also undergo transformations. This study aims to identify and compare the transformations that occur in the narrative codes of four road films produced between 1985 and 2017. Thus, the development of road films produced in Turkish cinema within the narrative context over a thirty-two-year period is intended to be determined. The examined four films are compared by arranging them chronologically according to their production dates, and the obtained findings are compared. The increasing realism of each structural element also increases its importance in the narrative codes, enabling films to be examined in different dimensions of meaning. Indeed, it is observed that it is possible to analyze all four films in terms of the morphology of fairy tales through the concepts of Monomyth and Exemplary Actors. However, it is determined that due to the dimensional nature of the films' meanings influenced by the order of production, certain elements of analysis can be reduced to abstract concepts. Furthermore, it is observed that the concept of the road is used not only as a subgenre in cinema but also as a tool to reflect social, societal, and cultural realities, with an increasing number of examples in the historical process. In this context, it is concluded that the conducted examination will enrich the meaning dimensions of the films and provide different interpretations in the literature.
