Comparative analysis of the military politics relationship in the political modernization process in Turkey (1774-1983)

This study focuses on the effect of the army on Turkish political modernization in the 1774-1983 period. Political modernization is decision-making processes in a parliamentary manner. The main question is the research is how the army-politics relationship shaped the state in the process of political modernization. 1774 was the beginning is the declaration of the state's need for modern political institutions by the sultan. The second period begins with republic in 1923 as a radical modernization project. The study ended in 1983 due to the fact that modernization has eroded in many issues by army. The subject is about the effect of the military on politics in the citizenship, secularism and democratization, which are the basic terms of political modernization. In these periods the army has had a various effect on politics from time to time. These periods were examined with the comparative politics method in the context of political modernization and effects of the army in the formation of modern state. The main data sources are books, articles, documentaries and published interviews. A critical realist approach has been adopted in the study. The contribution of the study as a method is to examine the effect of the army-politics relationship on the political modernization process by using the in-case cross-sectional comparison method. The original contribution of the study to the political science literature is the comparison of a modernizing political system by dividing it into historical sections and comparing it via diverse types of intervention such as revolution, coup, rebellion.
