Breastfeeding attitudes of Turkish and Syrian adolescent mothers and affecting factors

This study was carried out to determine the breastfeeding attitudes of Turkish and Syrian migrant adolescent mothers and the factors affecting their breastfeeding attitudes. This descriptive type of research was carried out between July 2019 and June 2020 with a total of 100 mothers who gave birth at Adana City Education and Research Hospital and met the criteria for inclusion in the study, including 52 Turkish and 48 Syrian immigrants. In the collection of data, "Personal Information Form", "Breastfeeding Attitude Scale "was used. It is a scale of 46 substances of type 5 lichen for the evaluation of various dimensions of attitudes that drive breastfeeding behaviors of mothers. The clauses are fully rated with the words (4), agree (3), ambivalent (2), little agree (1), and disagree at all (0). Scale positive substances (3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13, 15, 19, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 37, 38, 42, 43) and negative substances (1, 2, 5, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 25, 33, 34, 35, 36, 39, 40, 41, 44, 45, 46). Negative substances are rated as inverse. The total scale score is 184. The score of positive articles is 88 and the score of negative substances is 96. The data was collected by face-to-face interviews. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out in the IBM-SPSS V25 package program. In our research, it was found that the average breastfeeding attitude scale score of the participants of the Republic of Turkey was 59.58 ± 14.94, the Syrian migrant participants were 55.31 ± 13.36 and the total score average was 59.58 ± 14.94. There was a statistically significant difference between the age of the adolescent mothers, the time it took for the current baby to receive breast milk, the time the first child received breast milk, the positive mood about becoming a male mother, income status, spouse's working status, family type, prenatal care, family planning method and breastfeeding attitude scale total score averages. As a result of the analyses made; The difference between the breastfeeding attitudes of the mothers of Turkısh and the mothers of Syrian immigrants has been determined. In order to initiate and successful breastfeeding in adolescent mothers, which is a risky group, it is recommended to start prenatal trainings early, ensure their participation and increase the effectiveness of midwives in these trainings.
