Examination of Turkish textbooks in terms of theme teaching

There are many gains that are expected to be acquired by students in the course of teaching Turkish. One of them is theme teaching. Themes are determined as compulsory and optional themes in the Turkish Curriculum. In order for the theme teaching to be included in the teaching processes, the most needed and applied main material in the learning-teaching processes is undoubtedly the textbooks prepared periodically for the interests and expectations of the period. Textbooks were analysed using the document analysis method. Textbooks are the vertex sources of learning processes due to issues such as the ease of implementation of textbooks by students and teachers, being the main tool used in the course processes, being an important resource at the point of gaining learning attainments determined through texts. It is important that the Turkish language includes four basic language skills in a balanced way in the formation processes of the textbooks, that the activities cover all the stages of teaching at the point of the attainments they aim, that activity instructions are comprehensible that the functionality of selected texts and sub-text activities in the context of targeted theme teaching. Activities are important tools in terms of acquiring the targeted learning outcomes at the point of teaching the theme. This study is based on the examination of the identified secondary school Turkish textbooks from the point of view of theme teaching. The following topics were analyzed; Whether the activities in textbooks are functional in terms of theme teaching, distribution of activities in terms of grade level and language skills, At which stage activities can be included in the course processing processes, Clear and understandable activity guidelines for theme teaching, the levels of functionality of the activities that can be qualified within the scope of theme teaching in the general framework, Which topic proposal-sub-theme- points of the activities prepared in the context of the theme in the Turkish program, Which of the achievements of the events given in the Turkish program match with which. Textbooks have been studied using the document analysis method. As a result of the research carried out, the following were obtained; 'the activities related to the theme teaching in the textbooks examined are distributed in accordance with the compulsory and elective themes determined in the Turkish program', 'the compulsory and elective themes determined in the program are included at every grade level', 'Activities do not show a homogeneous distribution in terms of language skills', 'that listening skill is a neglected skill in activities', 'that the activities based directly on the text related to the theme are more oriented towards the basic skill of reading/comprehension', 'although the activities related to speaking and writing skills provide the opportunity to be answered independently of the text, the activities give the impression that they are identical to each other.' 'the guidelines in the activities are generally clear and understandable', 'activities at the point of functionality can be improved from the points of view specified in the findings and recommendations', 'each of the activities prepared in the context of the theme is in compliance with the topic suggestions that may develop around the main theme', 'in terms of basic language skills in the Turkish program of the activities, the skills are in accordance with the achievements they indicate.'
