Factors affecti̇ng the deradicalization process of Islamists with radical tendency in Turkey in the 1980s-1990s

Radical Islamist movements seen in Turkey since the 1970s reached their peak in the 1980s and 1990s. In the emergence of this situation, the religious pressures of Turkey's political authority and the marginalization in the society, the reflections of other radical Islamist movements in the world in our country, the individual's level of religious knowledge and social environment have been effective. In the 1990s, the Welfare Party leader Necmettin Erbakan's presence in the political arena, his representation and his political style had an effect on Islamists with radical tendencies to move away from non-democratic means, while radical tendencies were observed to have decreased to a large extent during the rule of the Justice and Development Party and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In addition, it is evaluated that individuals tend to soften in relatively strict religious rules. At this point, our thesis focuses on investigating the reasons that affected the de-radicalization process of Islamist individuals who had radical tendencies in the 1980s and 1990s.
