The effects of westernization movements on piano music education in Türkiye: A historical perspective

Westernization movements, which began in the late periods of the Ottoman Empire and gained momentum with the Republic, have created radical changes in the socio-cultural and educational structure of Turkey; one of the most prominent reflections of this transformation has been observed in the field of music and piano education. The aim of this research is to examine the pedagogical and institutional effects of the Westernization movements in Turkey, starting with the 1839 Tanzimat Edict and extending to the present, on piano music education from a historical perspective. The significance of the research lies in addressing the piano as a deep-rooted educational phenomenon intertwined with socio-political transformations ranging from the Tanzimat to the Republican revolutions, and from the multi-party period to neo-liberal policies. In the study, which was designed in a historical research model based on qualitative research approaches, the "document analysis" technique was used as a data collection and analysis tool. Official documents, academic books, articles, and postgraduate theses in the literature were examined, and the development of piano education was synthesized chronologically and thematically over four basic periods: 1839-1923, 1923-1950, 1950-1980, and 1980-2025. According to the research findings; in the first period, the piano entered the palace and schools as a symbol of Westernization, and a transition was made from the traditional meşk (master-apprentice) system to the notation system. In the second period, it became a strategic and ideological carrier of contemporary nation-building with the "National Music" objective of the Early Republic. In the third period, alongside the rise of popular culture, piano education was withdrawn into academic institutions by the state. In the last period, owing to the effects of neo-liberalism and digitalization, piano education broke free largely from the state monopoly and integrated into an informal and global network. In conclusion, piano education, which is an important indicator of Westernization or Turkish modernization, started as an ideological project dictated "top-down" by the state, institutionalized over time, and eventually evolved into an educational discipline that is technology-based, individualized, and has attained international academic standards.
