Developing Turkish national guideline for smoking cessation in primary care

Aim: In this study, we aimed to develop a practicable, up-to-date and effectual national guideline for smoking cessation in primary care. Method: Previously composed guidelines for smoking cessation in primary care in the World and in Turkey were screened.Guidelines, that were composed in English language in the last 10 years, were included in the study. Obtained guidelines were evaluated with AGREE II guideline quality assessing tool. Proper guidelines were selected to be adapted to Turkey. Results: Based on "Adım Adım Bir Rehberin Ulusal Koşullara Uyarlanması: TÜRKİYE İÇİN REHBER UYARLAMA KILAVUZU" which was composed by Turkish Evidence Based Medicine Association, "Supporting smoking cessation: a guide for health professionals" which was composed in 2011 and updated in 2014 by Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and "Jordan Guidelines for Tobacco Dependence Treatment 'Helping Smokers Quit'" which was composed in 2013 and updated in 2017 by Jordan Tobacco Dependence Treatment Guidelines Local Group, were decided to be adapted to Turkey. It is planned to prepare a document to meet the needs of primary care physicians, and to clearly clarify the process with details. Conclusion: Synthesizing and updating interventions for the adaptation of the existing guidelines were held and "National Guideline for Smoking Cessation in Primary Care – Turkey" was prepared. After target users and experts assess this adapted guideline, rejection or acceptance or rearrangement after review process is going to be followed before publication and extensification phase.
