The reflections of the military coups in Turkey US press

Military coups have always come at the top of the major issues in the history of Turkish Republic. Although the studies on this issue concerning our recent history are increasing day by day, that how the US press with its enormous power has regarded them before their implementation and the post, have been key questions. The adventure of military coups, which started on May 27, 1960 in the history of Turkish Republic, continued until 2016. While the role of the US in the latest example of the military interventions, which have emerged as a constant barrier in front of Turkey, was being negotiated, the attitude and the mission of the US media in those events received the greatest attention because especially since the beginning of the 20th century, the press has become the major force in the development of the events, in creating public opinion and informing people: hence the US press has had a huge impact on the world with its large and powerful media organs. Following the coups in Turkey in the eye of the US media is of great importance to understand both the coups and the Turkish society of that period in every aspect. For this, the US press was followed day by day within a wide time interval and important data have been obtained. Not only was the US press able to keep the pulse of the Turkish society very successfully by following the society more closely than the Turkish press, it also announced the forthcoming coups, and welcomed them positively after they had been implemented. The US press has continuosly evaluated the developments in Turkey in the axis of the US policies and has also analysed what policies Turkey should develop in the future. The basic framework this study is focusing on is how the US press reflected the military coups in Turkey in the period of 1960-2007.
