Abstract (EN)
This study employs self-determination theory (SDT) to examine the well-being and resilience of Somali refugee youth residing in Türkiye. A comprehensive understanding of Somali refugee youth is essential, as it influences their adaptation and psychological well-being. The research aims to investigate the factors that enhance and impact the resilience and well-being of Somali refugee youth by utilizing the three psychological needs outlined in SDT: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Through a qualitative approach, the study explored how these needs were met during displacement challenges and their subsequent effects on resilience. The study found that young Somali refugees have demonstrated significant resilience and made efforts to meet their fundamental psychological needs despite adversities and adverse events. These refugee youth developed autonomy and independence during their university years and social activities. Additionally, hobbies and employment challenges further enhanced their independence. Resilience was established upon a robust foundation by overcoming obstacles through fostering self-awareness, spirituality, and empowering self-talk. The results of the study indicated that meeting the three fundamental needs improved well-being in several domains. These included acquiring Turkish language proficiency, securing employment, engaging in hobbies, and receiving social support. Acquisition of Turkish proficiency enhanced participants' self-confidence and resilience, which subsequently increased their overall satisfaction. These findings have substantial implications for developing interventions and policies that promote refugees' sense of competence, autonomy, and connectedness to their communities. It is recommended that language and vocational training, mental health support, community involvement, increased access to social integration, employment, and educational opportunities be provided to enhance their resilience and well-being.
