Analise of wheat and wheat pruducts in Turkish economy

The Republic of Turkey is a country founded on the Anatolia, known as the homelandof wheat. Throughout its history, the country was self adequate in terms of wheat. Between1950-1990, the wheat supply of the country has showed an increasing tendency except somedrought years. During those years, Turkey has adopted the developments realized in worldagriculture as a result of technological revolutions by using its best agricultural r&d staff, butin 1990s this tendency to increase has left its place to stability. Except few productive years,the level of wheat production stayed constant.Despite the stability faced in wheat production, the population of the countrycontinued to increase steadily. However, wheat consumption per person stayed at a constantcurve. The lack of expansion and innovation in the use of improved seeds developed duringthe technological revolution period caused important problems both in yield and quality.Therefore, there has been a tremendous increase in wheat importation.Today, the situation is worrisome for future. Because the increase in the population iscontinuing but wheat supply which is one of the most important raw material of food industrycannot be met by domestic production. During the period in which our foreign debt isincreasing every day, the share of wheat deviated in total imports is also increasing and thiswill cause important problems in the near future. It is natural that this difficulty in macro scalewill affect individual economics of society in micro scale. Income scarcity, one of theimportant titles of country agenda, will be a more serious concern due to the increase inproduction costs of flour, bread, pasta and wheat products.This study was realized in order to examine how serious would be the difficulty ofsupply shortage, which is possible to be experienced in the future because of increasing wheatdemand, and to determine the precautions to prevent it.
