A Comparative analysis of the national and foreign commercial banks operating in Turkey

Banks are the financial intermediaries which form the backbone of financial systems because of the fact that they affect the distribution of sources, increase the inflationist pressures or increase the economic stagnation which in turn affect the economic stability, reflect the results of failures occuring in this area to overall economy. The stockholders of the bank, depositors, companies that are working together with a bank, other financial intermediares, both private and public, are directly interested in the banks, working efficiently with a strong financial basis. For the reasons stated above, a clear analysis of banks financial tables, accurate measure of their performance and stating the strong and weak points in their financial positions are very important. The purpose of this study is tostate the developments during 1993-1996 in the financial position of the national and foreign commercial banks which will then be grouped into four. This study, to match the purpose of the study which is explaired before, is made up of four parts. Firstly, the definition and basic functions and properties of the commercial banks were explained and the national and foreign banks which operate in Turkey by the end of the year 1996 are grouped. Secondly, the necessity for analyzing the commercial banks activities, performances etc. have been made clear and the contents of financial tables and the methods of financial analysis were explained. Thirdly, the evaluation of banks with a public or private capital and also foreign banks that also operate in Turkey were made through the use of the data published by Turkey Banks Association during 1993-1996, by the comparison and ratio analysis tecnigues. Finally, the results obtained in the third part were used for the comparison of national and foreign commercial banks during 1993 and 1996.
