Econometric analysis of domestic violence against women in Turkey: Comparison of 2008 and 2014 years

The birth of violence is based on the beginning of human history. In social life, women who is physically weak was seen as a creature to be ruled over by men in some societies and periods. In history, many societies that see women as a commodity that has to serve men, satisfy to his needs and desires have existed. Violence against women based on many reasons, such as this, which makes women worthless in society, is unfortunately widely seen in the family and this problem is the primary of the social problems of almost every geography, especially in our country today. A multinomial logit model method was used to investigate the dynamics of the domestic violence against women problem and to make a comparison using the survey data of the "Investigation of domestic violence against women" for both 2008 and 2014 of the Turkish Statistical Institute. In the study, econometric analyzes were conducted to determine the factors affecting domestic violence against women and to determine the differences between the effects of these factors in terms of years by using the 2008 and 2014 survey datas. As a result of the analyzes; it was revealed that the economic freedom of the women, the education she has received, the education her husband has received and especially the alcohol use of the her husband had serious effects on the domestic violence against women and also the differences in terms of regions and age groups. In addition, it was found that there is no significant differences between women living in rural areas and women living in urban areas, and the situation in which her husband has experienced violence in the past was the most effective factor that dramatically increased domestic violence against women. It has been pointed out to domestic violence against women in Turkey has reached to which point after passed 6 years and has been shown how effective the steps taken to reduce the domestic violence against women. Thus, these and similar researches are important in terms of they are a source of guidance in providing a safe, healthy and quality life for women by providing Turkey to focus on the issue of domestic violence against women and to plan supportive policies to reduce this problem.
