Turco-Libyan relations (1951-2011)

Tripoli has been under Ottoman rule from 1551 until 1911, that is the constitute the common history of Turkey and Libya. After 1911, the occupation periods of western states began to Libya and Libya ceased to be Turkish land. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923 in Anatolia. Libya's occupation period ended in 1951 when it declared its independence with the support of the UN and the Kingdom period began in Libya. Upon the independence of the two countries, diplomatic relations were established between them in 1951 with the affinity of their common background. By coup in 1969, took over the Libyan government by Muammar al-Gaddafi, he was the most important actor of Turkey-Libya relations. In this study 60-years political, economic and social relations were examined and compared that starts with King Idris and continuous Gaddafi. During the study, the documents of the Department of state archives and archives of Republic were examined in detail and a large number of unclear information and documents on the relations of the two countries were utilized. In addition to the archive documents, newspapers were carried out and the missing points in the study subject were fixed in line with the news in Turkish public press.
