Printed press as a propaganda device in the after of the music revolution in Turkey: A critical discourse analysis in the case of Cumhuriyet newspaper

The aim of this research conducted on Cumhuriyet newspaper, one of the discourse carriers of the music revolution in Turkey, is to reach findings on how and with which discourses the newspaper occasionally worked as a propaganda tool between 1930-2020 and to reveal the continuity of these discourses up to the present day. For this purpose, the music revolution discourses in Cumhuriyet newspaper between 1930-2020 were scanned. When selecting the discourses, care was taken to ensure that they were repeated frequently and reached data saturation, and if there were any individual examples, they were indicated. While the discourses were examined with critical discourse analysis, the analysis was deepened with Michel Foucault's concepts of genealogy and field of discourse. Thus, the discourses were distanced from the subject and were examined with their historical and conceptual background within the field of discourse. At the same time, the research avoided judging the modernization imaginations of the past based on today's conditions, and the continuity of the discourses in cultural memory and the public sphere was demonstrated. In the conclusion section, the constructed and repeated discourses regarding the music revolution are presented, while the continuity of these discourses, their relationship with each other and the hegemonic power they provide to the actors of the field are discussed. One of the main results of the study is that the discourses regarding the Turkish music revolution show a remarkable continuity despite the changes in the country and the Cumhuriyet newspaper throughout the long period examined, and in this respect, the research differs from the studies that repeat the criticisms of the music revolution in the literature, and presents the temporal map of the music revolution discourses.
