Evaluation of the geopolitical location of Turkey in the contex of social studies school subject

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the importance of Geopolitical location in Social Studies school subject; It is aimed to determine how it is included in the 2018 Social Studies curriculum. To this end, answers to following questions has been sought: "How is the content of Turkey's geopolitical location included in the 2018 Social Studies curriculum? How has the content of Turkey's geopolitical location been shaped in the text books recommended by the MEM (Turkish Ministry of National Education)? What are the teachers' views on the content and the way Turkey's geopolitical location is dealt with in Social Studies teaching?" In this study, document analysis and semi-structured interview form, which are qualitative research methods, were used. Descriptive analysis and content analysis methods were used to analyze the findings. It is stated that patriotism is not sufficiently covered as 2018 curriculum of Social Sciences has plenty of topics. Another one of the remarkable issues is that geopolitical location is included in the Social Sciences textbooks neither as a title nor a subtitle. The analysis conducted concludes that basic permanent and temporary components of geopolitics are distributed in MEB (Ministry of National Education) textbooks in a balanced manner. Moreover, teachers are knowledgeable about the importance of Turkey's geopolitical location but have difficulty in conveying it to the students.
