Abstract (EN)

Turkey's energy demand continuously increases depending on many factors; e.g. emerging economy, population growth and the increase of urbanization rate. It is estimated that this energy demand builds up over time in the future. Turkey relies heavily on external energy resources. This situation has a strong effect on current deficit. On the other hand, when it is considered that the whole world is running out of fossil resources such as petroleum, coal and natural gas; renewable energy resources issue is very important for the sustainable energy policies of countries. In this study, an energy analysis is made for both the world and Turkey considering the current conditions and the future. Then Turkey has been examined in terms of the potential in renewable energy resources, installed capacity and targets. Within this framework, renewable energy potential and installed capacity of Turkey; particularly solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal and biomass potentials and the installed capacity based on these sources are studied. Turkey uses a substantial part of its hydraulic potential at present but still a fair amount can be utilized. Moreover, it is found that there is a considerable potential in wind and solar energy. In the forthcoming period, with the advancement of technology in this field production costs will decrease. Therefore, wind and solar energy will be more economical. Regarding geothermal energy, installed power target has been achieved and a new target has been determined. In respect to biomass potential, it is examined that this potential is not utilized sufficiently.
