Abstract (EN)

Recently, studies on the socio-economic and demographic situation of Anatolian cities have accelerated. Lack of extensive economic and social researches on such a city that has been governed by many civilizations reveals a desire to research on Diyarbakir. Diyarbakir is surrounded by city walls and has a long historical background, yet its original site of establishment has never been changed. That is what makes it unique and rare. Diyarbakır has consistently maintained its position as an economic power because it is located on highways and has rich resources. Since it was on the transit route for commercial activities between the rich countries of the Mediterranean and Asia, a large number of caravans and therefore various goods were passing through. That's why there were lots of khans and caravansaries that merchants could take shelter in. The shopping malls and bazaars in the city were also an indicator of the city's economic vitality. Travelers traveling through Diyarbakır in the first half of the 19th century stated that it was possible to find all kinds of goods in the markets in the city and that there was a very lively economic activity in the city. As a natural consequence of the phenomenon of globalization, nations' economies cannot be shaped independently from world economic and political policies. Turkish economy has been analyzed in parallel to the characteristic periods of world economy and politics in the first chapter of that study. At the second chapter, it is established Diyarbakir's socio-economic structure. In this sense, factors such as demographic structure of the province, labor force structure and economic effects of intensive migration movements were examined. The economy of city at Republic period has been studied with three perspectives, sectorial, private-public investments and finally external trade. In the last part of the study; where the local provincial economy is located in this interaction, whether it is in parallel or whether it has an independent economic identity; we conducted an original study by using econometric analysis based on variables related to social, economic, demographic, health, tourism and education.
