Abstract (EN)
The newspaper Hakimiyeti Milliye was founded on January 10, 1920 at the request of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. It was initially established to inform the public about the National Struggle, before taking on the function of introducing the laws and innovations of the new regime, as well as ensuring their rapid implementation after the founding of the Republic. The newspaper, which was renamed Ulus in 1934, was the semi-official media organ and sometimes the semi-official spokesperson of the state, especially during the single-party period from 1923 to 1950. That is why this thesis, titled "Annotated Bibliography of Wiriting on Music in Ulus Newspaper Between 1934-1939", focuses on Ulus newspaper, which played an important role in adopting, promoting and disseminating the music policies of the early republican period. The study examines music-related news and articles published in Ulus in 1934-39, presenting them as an annotated bibliography. Atatürk's opening speech at the Turkish Grand National Assembly on November 1, 1934 marks the start date of the annotated bibliography, because it emphasised that innovations in art, especially music, should urgently be made. The speech is therefore widely seen as officially initiating the music reforms, which had de facto started previously. From the date of the speech onwards, Ulus newspaper started to give a wider space to articles and reports on music. The end date of the annotated bibliography is 1939, the start of World War II, because in the process leading to war newspapers sought to focus their attention on reporting political tensions in Turkey and internationally. From the middle of 1939, articles on music in Ulus newspaper decreased in frequency, with the few musical writings of this period mostly limited to concert news and program notes. The annotated bibliography chronologically lists music articles published in Ulus between 1934-39. This chronological index is tabulated for ease of reading. The table includes the date of publication of the news report and/or article (as day, month, year), the page in which it was published in the newspaper, the title, the name of the author (if any), and a brief summary of the text. The study also discusses music articles published in Ulus newspaper under the separate headings "Idea Articles" and "Institutions, Concert Venues and Laws". By scanning the literature on the Early Republican Period, it correlates these writings with music reform studies of the period and examines the policies adopted. The conclusion of the study briefly evaluates the period based on the data obtained. It is hoped that this annotated bibliography study, prepared as a MSGSÜ Social Sciences Institute Musicology Department Master's Thesis, will assist researchers conducting further work on the subject.
