International shipping ship owning companies crew selection criteria: The İzmir region analyze

This study aims at determining ship owning companies? crew selection criteria inzmir Region. In this study, human resources department managers of nine ship owningcompanies were interviewed face to face and their SMS ( Safety Management System)manuals were analyzed.In the first chapter of this study, basic concepts of the human resourcemanagement were given. These concepts are crew selection criteria, environmentalfactors affecting employment process, determining selection criteria and steps ofemployment process. In the following part, International and national regulationsregarding seafarers, ship owning companies? human resource management, policies andcrew selection criteria were investigated. In the third part, SMS manuals of companiesand interview forms were introduced. The data obtained from the interview forms andSMS documents were presented within this part. The results of the comparison between?interview criteria? and ?document criteria?, were found as stated below;Experience criteria for senior officer selection was stated in both•analyzes,Applicant references requested by companies were supported 100 %•both in application forms and ISM documents while this wassupported 56 % in interviews,All certificates requested by STCW 95 Convention were asked by•companies in written documents, this case was supported also ininterviews,Checking applicant seafarer?s periodical physical examination•certificate criteria were supported in both analyzes,While English knowledge level of senior officer applicants, which was•requested by company authorities was supported 89 % in interviews,this case was mentioned various level in companies? writtendocuments,While body language was found effective for employment decision•and supported 78 % by company authorities, it couldn?t reach anyrecord in the written documents,While applicant personality was supported 56 % in interviews, it•couldn?t reach any record in the written documents.Key Words: 1) International Shipping, 2) Ship Owning Companies,3) Crew Selection Criterias, 4) Recruitment
