The competitive advantages of freight villages on the international transportation and trade: A modal proposal

Rapid growth of industry has accelerated the flow of goods and stocks in the last thirty years. This rapid flow caused to the fast development in logistics sector. The growing logistics sector has been forced to control the goods flowing worldwide. Several alternative solutions are proposed to solve these problems of logistics developments. One of the solutions is freight villages that controls and facilitates logistics flow and activities. Logistics villages should be set up on the places where transportation networks and strong logistics flow are abound. In deciding about freight villages plant location, some criteria such as functionality, environmental ant legal issues should be taken into account. Several methods are developed for choosing freight villages areas.In this study, a model is suggested for freight village location selection in Turkey. The model applied and the results which are presented in tables discussed. The model is applied on seven cities at the north south logistic line. Multi criteria weighting with Delphi expertise technique is used. By using the findings reasonable and comparable results about the logistics potential of the cities chosen could be compared.As a result of the study, in general Mersin, Konya, Bilecik and Eskişehir cities were ahead among others. In logistic functionality, Mersin was found suitable for being international center, the others were found suitable for being local center and well matched with economical and perceptional estimations in the assessments of logistic centers.
