A general study of Ulvi Cemal Erkin's "Duyuşlar" and "Beş Damla" and it's technical examination

In this thesis, contributions of the composer group "Turkish Five" to the developing musical culture are described. One of the valuable members of "Turkish Five", Ulvi Cemal Erkin's works for piano "Duyuşlar" and "Beş Damla" are analyzed and suggestions are given for piano technique. Reforms and developments in music after the foundation of the Republic of Turkey are also examined. In the first section, Westernization process in the Ottoman Empire, cultural developments and the progress of policies on music after the foundation of the Republic of Turkey under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's leadership are analyzed. The lives of the composers of "Turkish Five", who studied classical music in Europe and established the foundations of a new movement by combining Turkish and Western Classical Music, are also studied. In the second section, the compositional language of Ulvi Cemal Erkin is described and his works are chronologically listed. In the third section, the works "Beş Damla" and "Duyuşlar" are harmonically and formally analyzed and technical suggestions with examples are given for each movement. Usage of modal harmony, implementation of local motifs and rhythmic structures suggest that these two works belong to Erkin's early period. This study aims to describe the contributions of the "Turkish Five" to the Modern Turkish Classical Music within the context of innovations made with the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, and to guide the pianists who intend to learn about Ulvi Cemal Erkin's "Beş Damla" and "Duyuşlar", both significant works in his piano repertory, with suggestions for practice methods.
