Abstract (EN)

Medieval, despite the perception of being dark age, contains various scientific, artistic and philosophical developments that later leads us to modern age. Puprpose of this thesis, which we will inspect the philosophical developments of medieval and it's significance for human history within the scope of Umberto Eco's fictional "Gülün Adı", initially discuss this perception about medieval and examine changes and progress of this period of time, first to last years. The reason of this thesis studying "Gülün Adı" under philosophical inspection is, as an expert of medieval, Umberto Eco, not only disproves the biggest dellusion of being dark about medieval, also shed light on ideals and cultures of the era with his pieces. Eco's "Gülün Adı", besides it's fictional base, with it's multilayered structure, also includes Christian Medieval's philosophical dynamics with metaphorical elements. Hence this piece is an substantial resource about medieval philosophy and important to understand Umberto Eco's perspective of this eras philosophy. With this thesis, dominant authorities of time Gülün Adı mentions in it's construct, review of significant events of this time in Eco's eyes, how did these set forth and how did these grounded intellectually are been addressed. In the book, how subjects of Mediterranean Medieval Philosophy -like scholarship, knowledge, ontology, ethics- have been seen are studied, and what these images based upon is ascertained. Thesis concludes that Gülün Adı contains numerous narratives about intellectual nature of Mediterranean medieval, and this narrative's rank among exactly the middle of the era's political discussions and social living. At that point, analysis of these narratives, also illuminates the era's political discussions and social living, and have importance in understanding era's revolutionary progress.
