Abstract (EN)

Objective: The study is to determine the effect of hope-focused motivational interviewing on the depression, anxiety, stress, and hope levels of individuals with hemodialysis treatment. Method: This study is a single-blind randomized controlled trial designed in a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design. The population of the study consisted of 70 individuals who were treated in the Akdeniz University Hospital Hemodialysis Unit, and the sample consisted of 46 individuals, who met the added exclusion criteria. The clinical registration number of the study is NCT04927923. The study data were obtained between August 2021 and February 2022 using the Socio-demographic Data Form, the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale, and the Dispositional Hope Scale. A hope focused motivational interview was conducted with the intervention group for eight weeks, once a week, lasting 45-60 minutes. The control group received no intervention other than routine treatment. As a result of the research, the data of 44 individuals, 22 of which were interventions and 22 of which were controls, were analyzed. The analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test, T-test, MANOVA and Chi-Square tests in the SPSS 23.0 program. 95% confidence interval (or α=0.05 margin of error) was used to determine the differences in the analyses. Results: It was determined that the depression, anxiety, and stress mean scores of the individuals in the intervention group after Hope-Focused Motivational Interview decreased, there was an increase in the mean hope score, and these changes created a significant difference compared to the individuals in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Hope focused motivational interview is an effective intervention in reducing depression, anxiety and stress levels and increasing hope levels of individuals with hemodialysis treatment. It is recommended to include hope focused motivational interview in the psychosocial care of chronic diseases, to evaluate its usefulness by applying it to different patient groups, and to expand its use.
