The slope of violence on college students and students' standpoint on intrafamilial of violence(Case of Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University)

Violence in the family is a societal problem. It is a human rights abuse against people of all genders and at all ages everywhere in the world. Domestic violence mostly occurs as violence against the spouse and the violence perpetrated by men against women. Gender discrimination lies behind the violence in the family. However, the studies conducted on the field are still limited due to the fact that it is regarded as a private matter. In this study, we aimed to analyse the point of view of the students studying at the University of Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam on domestic violence in every aspect. This study has been carried out in order that the opinions of these University students who are the parents of the future can be determined and we can also contribute to the reduction of violence to some extent because the attitudes they show towards violence affect whether they will perpetrate violence against their spouses and children in the future. The sample of this study which was conducted on the students studying at the University of Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam consists of 525 female students which accounts for 5 % of total 10.500 female students and 469 male students which accounts for 5 % of total 9.380 male students. In other words, 994 female and male students in total are included in this research.In this study, a questionnaire consisted of open and close ended questions and Likert scale have been carried out on the students as a data collection tool. The Socio-Economic levels of the students studying at the University of Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam, the educational status of their parents, whether they have violence in the family or they have ever been exposed to any kind of violence, how they have behaved and reacted in case of violence, their opinions about the reasons of violence, whether they have been exposed to economic, emotional or sexual violence, whether violence is a learnt behaviour or it is related with genetics, whether they have learnt violence within the family, their opinions on the violence against women, children in the family and their solution recommendations to stop violence have been determined.In accordance with the result of the research, the most eye-catching point is that the boys and the girls have different opinions about violence. Boys consider violence more admissible than girls. Furthermore, they give reasons which justify violence and they especially think that the reason for the violence against women is the women themselves. The general result obtained through the research: Most of the youth adopt a negative attitude towards violence. Keywords: Family, Youth, Women, Violence.
