Relationship between universty students personality traits and life satisfaction determining the mediating role of leisure time attitude

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research is to reveal how effective the attitude developed towards leisure time can be in the possible relationship between personality and life satisfaction among university students. In addition, it is trying to understand which demographic characteristics can be affected by personality, life satisfaction and leisure attitude. The sample group of the study was determined by simple random sampling method. A total of 464 students (X̄age=22.00±3.88), 309 female and 155 male, studying at Trabzon University Faculty of Sport Sciences, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Communication, voluntarily participated in this study. In the research, "Five Factor Personality Scale" developed by Benet-Martinez and John (1998) and adapted into Turkish by Sümer and Sümer (2005), Diener et al. (1985) and adapted into Turkish by Baysal and Dağlı (2016), and the Leisure Attitude Scale developed by Ragheb and Beard (1982) and adapted by Akgül and Gürbüz (2010). Windows SPSS 26.0 statistical program was used for statistical tests. According to the analyzes, no significant differences were found in terms of gender on personality, life satisfaction and leisure time attitude of the participants. While no significant differences were found in terms of both personality and life satisfaction in terms of grade variable, significant differences were found in leisure time attitude. While significant differences were found in the personality traits and life satisfaction of the participants according to whether sport faculty studens or not, In terms of whether the participate in regular activities and have difficulty in evaluating their leisure time, significant differences were found in personality, life satisfaction and leisure time attitude. While significant relationships were found between personality traits and both life satisfaction and leisure time attitude, no significant relationship was found between leisure time attitude and life satisfaction. In addition, no mediating role of leisure time attitude was found in the effect of personality on life satisfaction. The results of this study are important in terms of bringing a different perspective to the relationships between personality traits, life satisfaction and leisure time attitude variables.
