Examining the relationship between university students' cyberloafing behaviors and school burnout in terms of some variables

In this study, it was aimed to examine the predictive effects of university students' school burnout and some demographic variables on cyberloafing behaviors. The study was carried out with online and face-to-face applications with 406 students from a state university in Izmir, reached by convenient sampling method. "Cyber Loafing Scale", "Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Form" and "Personal Information Form", which deals with some sociodemographic information about the participants, were used to obtain the data. In the analysis process of the data, independent sample t-test, One Way ANOVA, Post-Hoc (Scheffe), Pearson Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSS 28.0 package program. The findings showed that there is a positive and low level relationship between shopping, real-time updating and gaming/gambling sub-factors of cyberloafing and burnout and depersonalization sub-factors of school burnout. In addition, it was found that only competence, one of the sub-dimensions of school burnout and age, grade point average and daily internet use had a significant predictive effect on cyberloafing. Significant differences were observed in the sub-dimensions of the scale, gaming/gambling by gender; sharing and accessing online content by age; sharing and accessing online content by grade level; real-time updating according to GPA; shopping and gaming/gambling according to school absenteeism; sharing, shopping and real-time updating according to daily internet usage time. There were no differences in the sub-dimensions of the scale according to the way of choosing the department. The results obtained at the end of the research were discussed in the light of the literature and some suggestions for future studies and practitioners were presented.
