Investigation of the relationships between the levels of self-actualization, general procrastination and hopelessness among the last year university students

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study was to analize the relationships between the levels of self-actualization, hopelessness and general procrastination of last year university students. The research is formed of a total of 150 senior university students, including 84 girls and 66 boys. In this study, Personal Orientation Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Scale, General Procrastination Scale and Personal Information Form are used for data collection..The data were analyzed by using SPSS programme.They were interpreted by doing (%) percentage, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann Whitney U Test. Result showed that significant correlations between Self actualtization? areaes, Hopelessness, and General Procrastination.Besides there were significant diffrences on Self actualtization? areas, Hopelessness, and General Procrastination by participants?s personal information.The analysis shows that value of self-actualization and self-esteem which are sub-dimensions of self actualization were negatively related to general procrastination. In this case, the students who had high scores at self actualization and self-esteem tend to say less procrastinate.The analysis also shows that relationship between levels of hopelessness and effective time management, getting support from inside, emotional fluency, self respect, reconciliation and acceptance levels of aggression were found statistically significant relationships.None significant relationship was found between living an existential life and establishing intimacy with others which are sub-dimensions of self actualizationand procrastination or hopelessness.The result of analysis of the relationship between hopelessness and the general tendency to delay, calculated as 17. Examined in a statistically significant relationship between hopelessness, and procrastination can be said that individuals who score high at hopelessness tests more likely to postpone.Based on personal characteristics of research participants, the analysis show some important differences between levels of self actualization, hopelessness and general procrastination.There were no differences between the scores of hopelessness, general procrastination and self actualization based on their age. According to the faculties of education there was no observable difference between the general procrastination and hopelessness scores .Implications of findings were discussed and some suggestions were made for the educator, psychological counselor and students.Key Words: Self-Actualization, General Procrastination, Hopelessness
