The appearances of metadiscourse markers in different text types

By understanding language structures and text type features, individuals improve their critical thinking skills and can present their messages more effectively. Thus, a more comprehensive understanding of the texts is made possible during the reading process, and faster access to information is provided. Metadiscourse consists of linguistic features that not only reflect the inherent characteristics of the text but also its social context and function. These features provide clues about how the text should be classified. The metadiscourse model focuses on the textual features of the text and the interaction between the writer and the reader. While the textual structure indicates how the text is organized, what information is presented where, and how; interpersonal interaction features show the bond the author establishes with the reader and how they use the text as an interaction tool. This research aims to reveal the appearance of metadiscourse determinants in different text types, based on the Metadiscourse Model developed by Hyland. In the study, three text types, including short stories, essays, and research articles, and 295 texts were analyzed. As a result of the data obtained, it was revealed that each text type exhibited its own unique metadiscourse-determining appearance. Information sharing that includes subjective opinions as well as presenting objective data in research articles, the fictional structure and self-references in story texts, the author's tendency to address the reader directly in essay-type texts, allow text type distinctions to be made as examples of the genre-specific use of metadiscourse markers.
