Examination of teachers' opinions about distanse education social studies course

The aim of this study is to offer concrete solutions to the problems that are believed to exist in Social Studies course with distance education and to make the process more efficient. Quantitative data of the research, in which mixed method was applied, were obtained with "Questionnaire on Teachers' Views on Social Studies Course with Distance Education", while qualitative data were obtained with a semi-structured interview form created by the researcher. Views of 100 Social Studies teachers working in 94 schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Amasya province during the academic year 2022-2023 were taken in the quantitative phase of the study, while views of 15 Social Studies teachers were taken in the qualitative phase. In the analysis of quantitative data, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed by using SPSS 22.00 software. In addition, post-hoc Tukey and post-hoc Tamhane tests were administered to find out the source of the difference in statements in which statistically significant differences were found. Content analysis technique was used to analyse qualitative data. In the study, it was found that teachers with low level of computer use had negative views about distance education, while teachers with moderate level of computer use thought that exams were not fair, attention was distracted more quickly, material use was more difficult and distance education prevented benefiting from teaching experiences. It was found that teachers with moderate, good and very good levels of computer use were more willing to teach than teachers with low levels of computer use, and there was no significant difference between their views on distance education according to their average daily internet and computer usage time. In this context, it can be said that while the level of computer use affects teachers' views on distance education and Social Studies course, the duration of internet and computer use does not affect their views on distance education. In the study, it was concluded that teachers preferred face- to-face education to distance education, they thought that the methods and techniques used were insufficient in achieving outcomes, they did not think that the assessment and evaluation techniques used in distance education were sufficient and objective, they thought that classroom control, feedback and homework follow-up were difficult, and the use of technology and infrastructure problems affected the efficiency of the course negatively.
