Varolmak ve bilgi: Platon ve Aristoteles

This thesis investigates the establishment of the activity of knowing and its relation to being, in certain Platonic and Aristotelian texts. Beings that are said to be in many ways are displayed. The following questions are asked with regard to the different ways of being: What do these distinct ways of being signify and mean? What kind of a difference does it create to be aware of these distinct ways of being and what is the importance of distinguishing them? The question `what is being?? is asked and in order for it to be a guide to the answering of this question, the coming about of knowing is investigated. Throughout the thesis, knowing is taken as a process, and an account is being given with regard to whatever that happens in this process. Aristotle discusses in his PeriPsykhes (On the Soul) the process of knowing thoroughly and gives a detailed account of perception which has an important part in the process of knowing. Plato in his dialogue called Sophist, by means of the question concerning being, investigates the relation between being and non-being and displays that non-being also is. In another dialogue namely Theaetetus, Plato evaluates knowing as a process and gives a detailed account on how something is to be grasped thoroughly. This thesis which tries to display the back-forth relation of knowing and being, has the aim of presenting being and knowledge in Plato and Aristotle in one certain single frame.
