The effect of teaching measurement unit of the 8th grades' mathematics lesson based on teaching to v diagrams onto the academic achievements of the students

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the instruction about Geometric solid surface fields based on Vee-diagrams to the year primary students? academic success in mathematics lessons.This study was made with 48 primary school students in İzmir-Bornova in 2009-2010 academic years. The empirical method with pretest-posttest control group was used in this study. In experimental group there were 24 students, in control group there were 24 students.In experimental group the lessons were carried out by the instruction method based on Vee-diagrams. The application lasted two weeks. The success test which was prepared by the researcher was used to obtain data. The success test was used three times: before the application (pretest), after the application (posttest) and after a month from application. The datas were analyzed by the program SPSS 12.0.After the datas were analyzed, we compared the average grade of the success test in experimental group where the instruction based on Vee-diagrams with the average grade of the success test in control group where the traditional method was used. And a .05 significant distinction was found between the control group students? average grade of stableness where the traditional method was used and the experimental group students? average grade of stableness where the instruction based on Vee-diagrams was used.As a result the instruction based on Vee-diagrams in the subject of geometric solids? surface fields raised year students? mathematical success but it couldn?t provide the permanency.Key Words: Mathematic Education and Instruction, Vee-Diagrams, Traditional Instruction Method, Success.
