Abstract (EN)

The aim of this thesis was to examine infertility and periodontal parameters, and periodontal disease status in women attending in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics. The hypothesis is that plaque-induced periodontal diseases are possible impact factors in infertility. The other purpose of this thesis was to evaluate age, educational level, body mass index, smoking habits, oral hygiene-related behaviors, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in infertile females attending IVF clinics. After the gynecological examination and blood tests, infertile female patients were referred to the Yeditepe University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology. Data of age, educational level, body mass index, smoking habits, oral hygiene-related behaviors, and OHRQoL were collected from patients. Thereafter, periodontal parameters (plaque index, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing) were recorded. Recruited patients were classified into periodontal disease status groups. These groups were compared for infertility parameters as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and antral follicle count (AFC). Correlations between periodontal and infertility parameters were assessed. The results showed that all infertile women in the study population presented plaque-induced periodontal diseases. Both AMH levels and AFC values were significantly lower in the generalized Stage II Grade B periodontitis group compared to the gingivitis group. Regarding the whole study population, FSH was significantly and positively correlated with all periodontal parameters. AMH was significantly and negatively correlated with all periodontal parameters except clinical attachment level. AFC was significantly and negatively correlated with all periodontal parameters. Within the limitations of this study, present findings encourage that a larger study population should further be undertaken to confirm the impact of periodontal diseases on infertility and to determine the effect of pre-existing periodontal disease on IVF treatment, achievement of pregnancy as well as birth outcomes.
