The effect of art-based reminiscence therapy based on watson human care theory on the meaning of life and well-being in older individuals: An action research

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Art-Based Reminiscence Therapy based on Watson's Theory of Human Caring on the meaning and purpose of life, as well as well-being, in the elderly. Method: This research is designed as a participatory action research pattern based on the radical humanist paradigm, utilizing predominantly qualitative research methods. The study was conducted at the Private Isparta Nursing Home and Elderly Care Center located in Isparta City Center. Criterion sampling was used for sample selection. Pre-action, post-action, and follow-up (at the end of the first month following the action) data were obtained through individual interviews and scales (Meaning and Purpose of Life Scale, General Well-Being Scale). Based on the data obtained, participants were subjected to Art-Based Reminiscence Therapy based on Watson's Theory of Human Caring. Quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS package program, while qualitative data were analyzed using the NVivo package program through descriptive analysis method. Results: When the pre-action and post-action scale scores of the participants (n=18) were compared, the mean scores of the Meaning and Purpose of Life Scale and General Well-Being Scale (p<0.05) were significantly higher. It was determined that the participants reported a high level of satisfaction with Art-Based Reminiscence Therapy Based on Watson Human Care Theory. Qualitative data were found to support the quantitative findings. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that Art-Based Reminiscence Therapy based on Watson's Theory of Human Caring supports elderly individuals in finding meaning and purpose in life and enhances their overall well-being. In this context, it is recommended to apply Art-Based Reminiscence Therapy based on Watson's Theory of Human Caring to elderly individuals and evaluate its effects on different parameters.
