Bibliometric evaluation based on Web of Science database: Articles on science education

In this research, it is aimed to examine the bibliometric properties of science education articles published in the WoS database. Thus, it was thought that the study would contribute to the field at the point of development of the researches on the subject, prevent the researches from being repetitive, and help the researchers to create a roadmap by shedding light. In the research, bibliometrics was used since it was desired to reveal the current situation by examining the international articles published in the field of science education in terms of bibliometric parameters within the framework of the research questions. In the study, bibliometric data was obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) database and the scanning process was limited between 1975 and 2020. Scanned indexes were determined as SCI-Expended, SSCI, A&HCI, CPCI-S, CPCI-SSH, BKCI-S, BKCI-SSH and ESCI. During the scanning process, the keywords "science education, science learning, science teaching, science teacher, science curriculum, science textbook, science course, the teaching of science" were scanned in all languages and both in the titles and content of all publications types. As a result of the analysis, 11,472 articles in the category of "Education/Educational Research" created a data set and the data were presented in the form of tables and figures. The data in the tables were analyzed under the headings of Web of Science (WoS) categories, publication types, numerical distribution by years, the most frequently cited articles, active researchers, active journals, active countries, active institutions, active publication languages, most effective funds that support the publication process. In the study, the research was conducted by using the social network analysis method, which is used to visualize the relationships between the most commonly used keywords in science education articles and the most frequently cited publications. As a result of the research, it was determined that the most articles on science education were published in 2019 (949 articles). It has been seen that the most commonly used keyword in the field of science education is "science education", which is used in 1659 different articles. In addition, it has been found that the most active journal in the field of science education is "International Journal of Science Education", the most active country is "USA", the most effective institution is "Michigan State University", the most effective fund is "National Science Foundation from the USA", and the most effective language is "English". It was determined that the articles of Turkish origin published in the field of science education were mostly published in 2012. It has been determined that the most commonly used keyword in articles from Turkey published in the field of science education is "science education". Within the scope of the articles from Turkey published in the field of science education, it has been determined that the most effective journal is "Journal of Baltic Science Education", the most effective institution is "ODTU", and the most effective publication language is "English".
