Wilhelm Dilthey's history of philosophy

By modern times, It has been understood natural sciences with the mention of the scientific concept. The extent of science has also been determined as study according to the method of the natural sciences, therefore the sciences concerned with history and society has also determined according to method of the natural sciences. However, Dilthey demonstrated that subject and methods of historical and social sciences that he called 'human sciences' was different from natural sciences by benefitting from historiography, a strong tradition in German and he said that 'human sciences' could not be apart from life world. Dilthey has said that the method of natural sciences showed success on natural sciences, such as physics, chemistry but that method could not be applied to the spiritual world that was a historical and social field. According to Dilthey, natural sciences focus heavily on natural phenomena. The thing to be addressed in the historical-social field are 'the means'. Natural phenomena operates according to a certain law, but human actions can not be based on a certain law. The will of people, requests and objectives more than external factors redirects human action. We can understand human actions by these values directing actions. What directing these values is design of human being. So, those are historical and social order, institutions and thought structures in which human create for oneself. Therefore, these can be subject of the understanding but not subject of an explanation within natural sciences. Things actuate human are mostly the values and meanings that generate by oneself. Human understand the external world, even nature in the light of these values and attribute a meaning to even nature. Therefore, instead of explaining we can understand historical-social field. However, we can not comprehend historical-social field as a whole because each historical period is a whole in itself. Each period has a meaning and value in itself. Each period is unique. Therefore, we can not review the whole of history and society. In the philosophy of history until Dilthey, we can see that history made progress towards a goal and the philosophy of trying to reveal the history and history of law was placed in a higher position than history. On the contrary, Dilthey says that history don't make progress towards a goal and the philosophy that tries to demonstrate history information is also a product of history. According to him, history and philosophy are both the products of living and the events of living.
