An evaluation of the use of artificial intelligence within the context of interior architecture studio courses

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has led to profound transformations in both the production methods and pedagogical approaches of design disciplines. At the core of this transformation, artificial intelligence technologies have transcended their role as mere tools of technical automation, directly influencing fundamental components of design such as creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making. Design studios, positioned at the center of interior architecture education, provide a critical research setting for examining the effects of these innovations. This study investigates the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into design studio processes through an experimental application conducted with second-year students in the Department of Interior Architecture. A mixed-methods approach was employed: quantitative data were obtained through pre-test–post-test measurements, expert evaluations, and the Technology Acceptance Model scale, while qualitative data were gathered through content analysis of student opinions. Participants were divided into two groups—the first group used artificial intelligence as a supportive element, whereas the second employed it as a primary design tool. The findings reveal that the use of artificial intelligence significantly enhanced students' design performance, creativity, problem-solving competence, and visual presentation quality. However, the magnitude of these effects varied depending on the mode of use. The results indicate that the strategic and systematic integration of artificial intelligence into interior architecture studios holds substantial potential for enriching learning experiences and advancing professional competencies.
