The relationship between attitude towards writing and writing skill: A meta analysis study

The relationship between attitude towards writing and writing skill has been revealed by many studies conducted in Türkiye and around the world. On the other hand, no meta-analysis study was found in which a general conclusion was drawn by combining these studies. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between attitude towards writing and writing skill by using meta-analysis method. Web of Science, Proquest, ERIC, YÖK Tez, ULAKBİM, Dergipark and Google Academic databases were used in order to collect related researches. These databases were searched with the keywords "writing attitude", "attitude towards writing" and "writing and attitude". As a result of the scans, the last of which was carried out in March 2022, the correlation values of 31 (k=31) from 28 different studies (n=28) published between 2001-2021 and meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were used in the meta-analysis. The total sample size of the studies included in the meta-analysis was 9149. In the analysis of the data, first of all, extreme value and publication bias checks were made. Publication bias was examined by funnel chart, fail-safe n tests, rank correlation and Egger's regression test. Random effects model and Fisher's Zr value were used to examine the overall effect size of the relationship between attitude towards writing and writing skill. In addition, subgroup analyzes were performed to examine whether the effect size differed significantly according to the moderator variables. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis statistical program was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the analyzes carried out, it was found that the overall effect size on the relationship between the attitude towards writing and writing skill was positive and at a moderate level (Zr=0.309 CI=0.199-0.419, SE=0.056, p<.001). In addition, it was observed that there were only significant differences in the type of publication from the moderator variables. Some suggestions were made depending on the findings of the study.
