Evaluation of the design parameters and operational efficiency of the newly commissioned advanced biological wastewater treatment: Gerenköy advanced biological wastewater treatment plant

The world population is increasing day by day with the developments in the field of health and technology, and the amount of waste water per capita is also increasing at the same rate. Today, with the rapidly increasing population and urbanization, the treatment of wastewater and giving it to the receiving environment is of vital importance for nature and living things. Many wastewater treatment plants have been designed and put into operation in the world and in our country for the treatment of wastewater. For this purpose, Gerenköy Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Facility with a capacity of 2,607 m3/day, whose construction was completed in 2019 by the İZSU General Directorate in order to minimize the negative effects of wastewater on the environment in Foça district of İzmir, was put into operation in 2020 for the treatment of urban wastewater. The facility is designed according to the "Advanced Biologically Activated Sludge" process. In order for the treatment plants to be operated in an efficient and sustainable manner, the values in the design parameters foreseen during the project phase must be determined correctly and the plants must provide these values during the operation period. For this purpose, the design parameters and operating efficiency of the Gerenköy Wastewater Treatment Plant were evaluated. As a result, it is thought that Gerenköy Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant provides carbon removal efficiency, but nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies cannot provide the treatment efficiencies targeted in the design, but the plant can reach the treatment efficiencies targeted in the design by changing the operating conditions.
