Transformation of privacy in new media: Symbolic construction of private space in Instagram

In this study, the usage, attitude and explanations of 15 Instagram user typecastings such as "presenters", "fashion and lifestyle makers" and "make-up makers" were examined in terms of privacy. A series of changes that took place in the West during the social transformation process have affected privacy. With the development of new technologies, the value, belief and norm systems in society have changed. In the study, discussions of public and private spheres in modern and postmodern society within the framework of privacy are examined. Then symbolic construction, are examined as part of new media technologies, social media and the self. In this context, 682 Instagram posts were analyzed with SPSS program by using documentary scanning technique, descriptive statistics and scanning models. According to the data analysis made in terms of privacy and Instagram usage of the typecastings, it was determined that the shares in the public sphere (57.2%) are more than the posts made in the private sphere (30.8%) and the posts made in the semi-private sphere (12%) in terms of place dimension. In the activity type, the posts made in the category of leisure time activities (62.6%) were the most common. In the relationship type, it was determined that the typecastings shared the most in the no relation (63.5%) category which includes the images they share alone, the objects they share and the landscape photographs. In the study, in which a total of 31 thousand 418 comments were examined, it was found that 87.47% positive comments were made. It has been seen that the typecastings have common presentations and appearances with each other in particular and with other typecastings in general.
