Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to identify the types of Turkish and German discourse produced on Twitter, one of the new media environments in the context of Turkish-German relations, and to analyze them in line with the critical discourse analysis model of Dutch linguist Teun A. van Dijk. Accordingly, Turkish and German discourses produced in the context of the main crises that emerged between Turkey and Germany during the Merkel era (2005-2021) were analyzed. In the analysis, the "Critical Discourse Analysis for Twitter" template developed based on Teun A. van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model was used. In the introduction section of the thesis, which consists of five chapters, information about the general outline of the thesis is given. In the second chapter, the concepts of new media and discourse are discussed in detail and a conceptual evaluation is made. In the third chapter, an interdisciplinary approach is adopted and the perspectives of scholars from different fields of science on discourse theory and discourse analysis are presented. In addition, this section explains the types and theories of discourse analysis. In the fourth chapter, Turkish-German relations are analyzed from a historical perspective and then Turkish-German relations in the Merkel era are analyzed. The evolution of Turkish-German relations within the historical framework, especially the developments in the Merkel era, are researched and analyzed in detail. The application part of the thesis is organized under the title "Twitter Discourses in the Context of Turkish-German Relations in New Media". The application section is organized under two main headings: "Examples of Turkish Discourse on Twitter" and "Examples of German Discourse on Twitter". Under these headings, seven discourse types identified on Twitter in the context of Turkish-German relations were analyzed with examples. The results of the analysis conducted with the critical discourse analysis method showed that both societies produce discourse using similar themes and language strategies in new media environments. In addition, through the analysis of discourse shaped by the use of language, valuable data has been revealed in understanding the dynamics of Turkish and German societies. Finally, the study presents various types of discourse and offers a new perspective on scientific research, especially on hate speech.
