Abstract (EN)

Objective: Hashimoto thyroiditis is the most common autoimmune thyroiditis disfunction. Even though the origins of the disease and the exact mechanism of pathogenesis is still not completely understood, genetic predisposition and environmental effects have been shown to be associated with disease development, progression, and severity. In recent years, low vitamin D has been set forth as a reason for the etiopathogenesis of many diseases. By measuring total, free and bioavailable 25OH vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in patients newly diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who have not yet started treatment, this study aimed to evaluate the possible relationship of these levels in disease etiopathogenesis and on diseade severity. Method: 65 Patients newly diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (58 females and 7 males, age average: 37.12±7.77) and 60 healthy control (54 females and 6 males, age average: 35.77±8.70) were included to the study. Total serum 25(OH)D, vitamin D-binding globulin and albumin levels were measured in the sera of all individuals in the study group. Calculated and bioavailable levels of 25(OH)D were calculated using vitamin D binding globulin and albumin binding affinity constants of 25(OH)D. Finding: The average total 25(OH)D levels in Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients were significantly lower than the control group (15.17 ± 6.26 ng/mL and 24.12 ± 10.16 ng/mL, p = <0.0001, respectively). Calculated free and bioavailable 25(OH)D levels were also significantly lower in the patient group than in the control group (20,63±15,01 pmol/l and 40,73±23,06 pmol/l, p<0,0001, 8,39±6,22 nmol/L and 16.94±9,93 nmol/L, p<0,0001, respectively). Total and 25(OH)D fractions in the whole group were found to be in positive correlations with FT4 levels, whereas in negative correlations with thyroid antibodies. Conclusion: In our study, it was thought that the total, calculated and bioavailable 25(OH)D levels in Hashimoto thyroiditis patients were low and this low level may have a role in the etiopathogenesis and on severity of Hashimoto thyroiditis.
