Abstract (EN)
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of listening to white noise, embracing the baby, and giving fetal position to pain during the process of taking heel blood sample in healty newborns Method: The study's universe was constituted of healthy newborns followed in Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital Neonatology service born between May 2016-December 2017.NIPS (Neonatal Infant Pain Scale) scoring system was used for pain score. A total of 160 newborns were reached. Findings: When the applications were compared during the process; embracing the baby group had lower mean scores of NIPS (3.5± 2.8) than other applications during taking heel blood sample, and differences between groups were found to be statistically significant (p=0.0001). When the applications were compared according to newborn' s peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) values during the pre-process, process and post-process; listening to white noise group had the lowest SpO2 value (92.0±3.9) during the process and the control group had the highest SpO2 value during the pre-process (98.0±14.3), the process (98.00±3.6) and the post-process (100.0±14.3). In binary comparisons made by Post-Hoc test to determine the differentiated group; it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between the giving fetal position and the control group (p=0.001), embracing the baby and giving fetal position group (p = 0.04), listening to white noise and the control group (p=0.0001). When the applications were compared according to crying durations during the pre-process, process and post-process, embracing the baby group was found to have shorter crying durations during the process (20.0±22.6) and post-process (0.0±48.5) than the giving fetal position, listening to white noise and the control group. The difference between the groups were statistically significant at the time of the process (p= 0.0001) and post-process (p= 0.0001) according to the crying duration. Conclusion: In the study, mean scores of NIPS and the crying duration were found to be lower in the embracing the baby group during the process and the post-process than listening to white noise, giving fetal position and the control groups' mean scores.
