A comparative analysis of local people's perceptions of rural tourism potential: Sille (Türkiye)-Shendi (Sudan)

This study aims to identify the elements that will support visitor experiences, environmental sensitivity and local development within the framework of sustainability in rural tourism destinations. In the study, the environmental attitudes of individuals participating in tourism activities in rural areas, their perceptions of sustainable tourism and their ties with rural life were examined in a multidimensional way. By analyzing the data obtained in line with the hypotheses formed with a literature-based approach, it was evaluated how visitors' attitudes towards rural tourism overlap with sustainable development goals. Through the scales used in the study, it has been determined that the tendency of visitors to exhibit environmentally sensitive behavior is high and their level of awareness about sustainability is generally positive. In addition, it has been determined that orientation towards local products, the search for cultural experiences and environmental awareness increase participation in rural tourism. In addition, it was also found that life integrated with nature and time spent in rural areas increase environmental awareness among individuals. As a result of hypothesis tests, it was observed that some demographic variables have significant effects on rural tourism preferences. The findings show that nature-oriented tourism planning, active participation of local people and raising environmental awareness of visitors play an important role in ensuring sustainability in rural tourism. The recommendations developed in this direction are instructive for both policy makers and rural tourism operators.
