Sports organizations in local development (Example of historicial Elmalı oil wrestling)

The aim of the research is to examine the history, features, procedures, changes and developments of Elmalı Oil Wrestling which is regularly held every year in Elmalı district of Antalya, and whose origin time is accepted as 1352, with the perspective of local development. In this study, a qualitative research method was used to evaluate participants' views. It has been made use of phenomeno-logical design which is one of a pattern of qualitative research. An interview technique was used as a data collection tool. Semi-structured interview technique has been applied while collecting data in this study. A document analysis technique is another method used in the research. Towards the subject of the research and the methods used, it has been interviewed with 7 tradesmen in Elmalı district, 4 managers who manage the organization management, 4 managers from institutions contributing the organization, 1 trainer, 1 referee, 3 spectators, 2 athletes and total 26 participants consisting of 4 instructors who work on different subjects related to Elmalı at Akdeniz University. By transferring the data obtained from the interviews into the NVivo 10 Programme, the content analyses have been made. Four themes have come forward with participants' Elmalı Oil Wrestling, and the research has been analyzed under these titles. These are "Features of Elmalı Oil Wrestling", "Historical Process of Elmalı Oil Wrestling", "Organization Process" and "Relation of Local Progress". There are six categories which constitute the theme of the feature of Elmalı Oil Wrestling. From 1957 to today, it has been given place to institutions which supplied arranging organizations about the historic process of Elmalı Oil Wrestling. Organization process has classed to planning, practise and evaluation. In the relation of local progress, there are categories which consist of cultural, social, economical, physical management and public participation. It has been concluded that Elmalı Oil Wrestling in parallel with its development has contributed to Elmalı's introduction in the long term and the local public's economy in the short term. Through this organization it has concluded that it has set an example to local progress with benefit for the public and society by taking into consideration the development within years. By evaluating the data which has been obtained from the research, it has given place to both organization related to organization process and the relation of local progress and suggestions that contribute to the studies which will be made by the researchers afterwards.
