Abstract (EN)

The concept of sustainability has become increasingly important. While sustainability is often defined by its "economic, environmental, and social" aspects, with increasing social issues within society, the dimension of society related to sustainability has gained more recognition. The goal of the thesis is to explore the roles of the green public spaces in promoting sustainable social development, which considered as the most approachable public areas, were chosen as the focal point of the research because they reflect the critical societal challenges, as a case study of the thesis the bağcılar district was selected to enhance the society within the dimensions of the social sustainability. The thesis begins with a literature review to clarify the role of social sustainability within an overarching sustainability framework. By examining various approaches to social sustainability and by adopting a framework by Berkeley Group and the UK Green Building Council, which was created in 2012 to evaluate its dimensions with other frameworks in social sustainability and Place-Making theory, while this research considers the development of green public spaces as communal places and analyzes their connection to essential characteristics related to social sustainability. Following examination of the theory, the findings demonstrate urban green public spaces regarding belonging, equality, and human rights for the Bağcılar district.
