Abstract (EN)
Chelonia mydas is an endangered species that plays a vital role in the conservation of tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems. In recent years, a decline in reproductive success has highlighted the threats faced by this species, with microbial infections emerging as a potential contributing factor. This study aimed to identify and characterize bacterial agents associated with unsuccessful nests and to evaluate the ecological, conservation, and potential public health dimensions of these infections. In 2023, bacterial isolations were performed from eggshell samples collected from unsuccessful nests on Akyatan Beach in Adana, Türkiye. The isolates were identified using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Among the identified bacteria, Citrobacter farmeri and Enterobacter cloacae, which possess pathogenic potential, were selected for detailed analysis. Whole genome sequencing was conducted for these two species, and their genomic structure, antibiotic resistance genes, mobile genetic elements, and CRISPR/Cas systems were characterized. The findings suggest that environmental pollution and anthropogenic pressures may increase the microbial load in sea turtles, negatively impacting their reproductive success. Moreover, the detection of bacteria with zoonotic potential indicates that human- turtle interactions should also be assessed from a public health perspective. This study sheds light on host-pathogen interactions in marine reptiles and contributes to conservation strategies and microbial monitoring efforts for this species.
