Examination of the relationship between quality of life and hopelessness in adults

This study examined the relationship between quality of life and hopelessness in adults. In the study, relational screening model, one of the general screening models among quantitative research methods, was used. The sample of this study consists of 401 adults between the ages of 18-55. Snowball sampling technique was used in the data collection process. Data in the study were collected through "WHOQOL-BREF Quality of Life Scale", "Beck Hopelessness Scale" and a demographic form prepared by the researcher. The analysis of the collected data was analyzed in SPSS 23 program. According to the research findings, while male participants had higher scores in the Physical Domain subdimension compared to female participants, female participants had higher scores in the Social Domain subdimension. However, no significant difference was found between the gender groups and the hopelessness scale. According to age groups, participants in the 18-23 and 24-29 age groups had higher scores in the Physical Domain and Psychological Domain subdimension, while the 18-23 age group had higher scores in the Environmental Domain subdimension compared to the 30-39 age group. While the participants in the 30-39 age group had higher Feelings About the Future sub-dimension scores than the other age groups, the participants in the 40-55 age group had lower Feelings About Loss of Motivation sub-dimension scores. Hopelessness Scale scores were higher in the 30-39 age group than in the 24-29 and 40-55 age groups. The Environmental Domain sub-dimension scores of the participants whose income exceeded their expenses were higher than those whose income was lower than their expenses. However, no significant difference was found between income status and the hopelessness scale and its sub-dimensions. According to education status, the Physical and Psychological Domain sub-dimension scores of postgraduate graduates were lower. While the Future Feelings sub-dimension scores of primary school and associate degree graduates were lower than those of undergraduate and graduate graduates, the Future Expectations sub-dimension scores of postgraduate graduates were lower than those of high school and undergraduate graduates. According to the correlation analysis, the Physical Domain and Psychological Domain showed a weak negative relationship with the hopelessness scale and its related sub-dimensions. The Social Domain and Environmental Domain also exhibit weak and very weak negative relationships with Feelings of Loss of Motivation, Future Expectations, and the Hopelessness Scale. Finally, it was found that the sub-dimensions of quality of life significantly predicted hopelessness and 30.9% of the change in hopelessness could be explained by the sub-dimensions of life satisfaction.
